Cooking and Our Health

Oven cooking is not only economical, but also a healthy way of nutrition. Do you know that celebrities’ personal trainers also cook for their clients and teach them to prepare special food? By cooking at home you are in charge of how much you put sugar, fats and oils, curbs, conservants and other chemicals in your food.  Also you’re aware of how fresh the products are.

What to do in Case of a Gas Leak

If you smell gas or you hear gas escaping from a broken line, or you see a broken gas line, leave the house immediately. Do not use matches or turn the light on and off. Do not use a telephone (portable, cellular, or regular) or operate any electrical switch or electronic device during this time as any flames or electric sparks could ignite the leaking gas. Call your local gas company or the fire department from a neighbor's house. Do not re-enter your house.

Common Gas Stove Problems

Usually the troubleshooting gas stove has to do with gas supply or ignition problems in the burners and the oven. Before doing any work, make sure the oven is unplugged and the gas supply is shut off.

In case the burner doesn’t light up, the reason is probably the clogged portholes that need to be cleaned from grease and food. When the flame is changing color from blue to yellow or white, or the flame is uneven, it’s time to adjust the pilot.

Sometimes the stove won't heat to the desired temperature or it heats unevenly.  The issue can be a defective door gasket. Test it by passing your hand around the door. Be careful; don’t touch it while the stove is turned on.  If you can feel heat escaping, the gasket needs to be replaced.

Frequent Electric Oven breakdowns

If the electric oven doesn’t heat, that’s probably because it’s not receiving power. Check the power cord, the plug and the outlet. Also test the oven units usually located under the cooktop of the range.  If the stove is getting power, but the heating element is still cold, it probably needs to be replaced.

Most of electric stove problems are fixed by replacing parts. In order to do so, you need to test the oven and elements with VOM. If you don't have a VOM, take the element to a professional technician for testing.
